Happy New Year! A new year, a new goat.

 Day 2: Three Rivers, CA to Las Vegas, NV

Second leg of our trip - about 6 hours driving, we crossed the California-Nevada border.  Bright lights and casinos greeted us just on the other side.

11:00am - Three Rivers 

We left our little Airstream on search of great sequoia trees.  We passed through Three Rivers and stopped at a local coffee shop next to the river (I only saw one river, I'll take their word for it there are two more).  The town was super charming and hospitable. 

This river was beautiful, almost straight from a fictional novel or fairy tale.

We headed up towards the General Sherman Tree in Sequoia national park.  We got our snow chains ready to go.  As got to the entrance of the park, we were informed that the park was closed! Apparently the highways leading in were all blocked from heavy snowfall the day before.

But we decided we wouldn't let that stop us!

1:00pm - Leaving Sequoia area (after spending 30 seconds doing a u-turn in the National Park)

We headed towards good old Las Vegas (this means "The Meadows" in Spanish - we learned that yesterday!).  We got to see some great sights going into and coming out of the Sequoia area.

Misty mountains were really cool and set the mood for our journey out of Middle Ear... I mean California.

3:00pm - Lost in a fog

After passing through Bakersfield just outside of Los Angeles, we found ourselves going up into the mountains towards the Nevada-California border covered in fog.

Billy: I've never driven in fog this thick - I literally could not see more than a few feet in front of me while driving.  Super scary and exciting!

 7:00pm - Las Vegas

As we approach our resting destination in Las Vegas, we could see Las Vegas behind the mountains...

The light in the distance - it's the sun, no it's the moon...no...it's Las Vegas!!!

Once we arrived, we then celebrated the new year!





Greeted to our Airbnb by a nice bottle of champagne from our host!

Celebratory dinner!  Steak, edamame, rice, and salmon.  And more edamame.  (and champagne)

12:00am - Happy New Year!

We rang in the New Year amongst thousands of others on the Las Vegas strip.  To say it was difficult to move around is an understatement.  We had a good time though, watching the fireworks show!





Next stop: Grand Canyon West and Meadview!

 Days 11-13: Durango, CO This week we have been staying at Durango and working.  We first checked out the local coffee shop.  Downtown Durango had a really nice view of the mountains.     We didn't do that much this week except work and explore the downtown area.  One place we really liked though was the bookstore.  In fact, we liked it so much that Mary made Billy take a bunch of pictures! This is an eclectic collections of different types of books - from the Modern House Bus to the Gardener's guide to food growing in your backyard.  Mary loves this stuff. Mary and her mushrooms. More books.       The bookstore had a lot of books. We then walked around Durango just taking in the sights.  We got a lot of nice pictures from around the neighborhood we were staying at! Spring is here!!!

Day 10: Out of the snow and onward to Durango! 8:00am - Breakfast We started the day by having a nice little breakfast after a long hard day prior. Gotta love the free hotel breakfast foods.  Billy: I was strategizing my way down out of the snowy mountains without crashing Cleetus. 9:00am - Walking around Telluride We took the morning and walked around the town.  We went to ACE hardware to get gloves.  Billy also tested his backup pair of snow chains on Cleetus to make sure they fit.  Ironically, the roads had melted and we didn't actually need snow chains anymore :-/ The sun is coming. It's almost here! Hello sun master! Please warm us up! It's still coooold!! Thank youuu! The beautiful town of Telluride.  It's basically a ski resort. We couldn't see this beauty at night. The icicles were long enough to pierce through Billy.  Eeek! Looks like an old western town. Big trees! 12:00pm - On the road again We got on the road and headed towards Durango, CO....

Starting a new adventure!

Day 1: Mountain View, CA to Three Rivers, CA First leg of our trip - almost four hours of driving exactly.  We'll be posting our progress as we go along from Mountain View to Bastrop. 5:00pm - Goodbye, California Yesterday we said goodbye to our California homes and bid farewell to Mountain View and the Bay Area.  The last month has been so incredibly busy that it wasn't until we were sitting in an empty apartment that we had time to soak in and appreciate the gravity of what was happening: For the first time since 2014 we were leaving our California homes to travel east and settle in Texas. We celebrated by playing lots of video games - specifically Hades  - and drinking a whole bottle of 3-year-old Martinelli's. Mary: So empty... Except for the leaves. Those leaves have been tormenting Billy for the last year. I'm sure he won't be missing those. We also revisited our old haunts. The main one was Castro Street in Mountain View!
